THE today announced the top Asian university rankings in the Asian University Rankings 2022. With 616 universities from 31 countries and regions, this ranking highlights the dynamism and strengths of higher education in the Asian continent.
In China, Tsinghua University and Peking University are ranked 1st and 2nd respectively, maintaining the top 2 in Asia for 3 consecutive years.
On the other hand, the number of ranked-in schools in Japan increased from 116 schools in the previous year to 118 schools, and continued to be the highest. However, the results were lower than the previous year, and the number of schools in the top 10 which was 2 schools in 2021 was 1 school, and the number of schools in the top 100 which was 14 schools in 2020 was 8 schools. In addition, Palestinian universities participated for the first time, and Saudi Arabia has increased from 4 schools in the previous year to 6 schools in the top 100.
The results of the Asian University Rankings 2022 will be announced exclusively at the Asian University Summit, which will be held jointly with Fujita Medical University from May 31st to June 2nd.

Country-specific analysis
The number of ranked-in universities in Japan increased from 116 schools in the previous year to 118 schools, the highest number for seven consecutive years (2016 is China and top ties). The University of Tokyo remains in 6th place, while Kyoto University drops 2 ranks to 12th place from the top 10, reflecting Japan’s overall downtrend. There were 14 Japanese universities in the top 100 in 2020, but only 8 this year.
China, on the other hand, has established a solid position in the Asian higher education system. It has been in the top two for three consecutive years, with 30 schools in the top 100 (same as the previous year). Twenty-two of these 30 schools have risen or remained on par with the previous year. The number of rank-ins in the overall ranking increased from 91 schools in the previous year to 97 schools, and came in second place.
The number of rank-ins in India increased from 63 schools in the previous year to 71 schools, ranking third. Only one Indian Institute of Science in 42nd place broke into the top 50 (down from 37th in the previous year), but 3 schools including the JSS Institute of Higher Education and Research, which participated for the first time in 65th place, entered the top 100. rice field. The number of universities ranked in the top 200 has decreased from 18 in the previous year to 17. Of the 14 schools ranked in both 2020 and 21 years, 8 schools went up and 6 went down.
The number of ranked-in schools in Taiwan increased from 38 schools in the previous year to 40 schools, but the number of top 100 schools was 6 and decreased from 8 schools in the previous year. National Taiwan University was ranked 21st in Thailand (slightly down from 20th in the previous year), and Taipei Medical University was 29th (slightly up from 30th). Established in 2021 by the merger of National Yang Ming Chiao University and National Yang Ming Chiao University, National Yang Ming Chiao University was ranked 44th in Thailand and the highest among the first participating schools. Before the merger, the rankings of both schools in the previous year were 78th and 90th, respectively.
Pakistan has significantly increased its rank-in from 16 schools in the previous year to 21 schools. Although I couldn’t make it into the Top 100 (Quaid y Azam University dropped 16 ranks to 116th), the number of top 200 graduates doubled from 3 to 6.
In Thailand, 17 schools with the same number as the previous year ranked in, but the number of top 200 schools decreased from 3 in 2021 to 1. Mahidol University, the flagship school, is also down 15 ranks to 145th place.
Indonesia also significantly increased the number of rank-ins from 9 schools in the previous year to 14 schools. However, the University of Indonesia, the flagship school, fell from the 194th place Thailand to the band 201-250 and dropped out of the top 200.
